Hermann Kanzler (1822-1888), German general of the pontifical army, was born in Weingarten, Baden. He did his licentiate studies at Mannheim and then entered the military college of Karlsruhe. In 1841, however, he renounced his military career and dedicated himself to the study of languages and travel.
